Main Excursion
Main excursion
Escorted motorcycle tour along road by the river Nemunas (45 km one direction). Local motorcyclists are used to call this road as “Lithuanian route 66”. The road is full of amazing views of Nemunas valley, mounds, manors, castles and history
Veliuona is one of the oldest settlements in Lithuania. Archaeological finds show that people lived here already in the Stone Age. At the confluence of the Nemunas and Veliuonėlė, on a hill about 30 m high, two mounds stand next to each other – Gediminas grave (the Grand duke of Lithuania, founder of Vilnius) mound and Castle mounds. Castles have stood on them since the 13th century. There is no exact date when Veliuona Castle was built. According to some sources, it was 1245. In 1291 Veliuona Castle (Junigeda) is mentioned in the chronicle of Peter Von Dusburg. Veliuona fortress in 13th-15th centuries was one of the most important fortresses on the right bank of the Nemunas in the fight against the Crusaders.
Legends say that the temple of Veliona, the goddess of the dead, stood in these places before Christianity took its place instead of the old pagan Lithuanians in 15 th century.
Veliuona is one of the oldest settlements in Lithuania. Archaeological finds
Our route leads to the Raudone castle. The elegant renaissance style castle hides a wonderful love story. The story had started in a far Portugal and lasted in the heart of Lithuania. The Portuguese José de Faria e Castro’s extraordinary love for Sofia Vaksel forever connected Madeira and Raudone. Their love is still protected by park alleys, ponds, and legends. After the story about the castle – the lunch will be served.
Panemune castle will meet us standing tall and mysterious. The history of the castel starts at the 14 th century, but the recent castle was built in the 16th century as a duke family residence. There is a legend, that castle owner Gedgaudas had excavated the tunel under Nemunas leading to his manor on the other side of the river. Local people are saying that during the war of 1812, Napaleon send his soldiers to search for that tunnel.
The castle used to have 7 toilets installed in the family rooms. It was the innovative solution. For example, the kings who had ruled France at that times – had never heard of the toilet yet.
Excursion A
Excurssion A „Beer brewer with tasting in Kaunas“. Bus trip.
Get to know the beer production process up close in the new creative space – Wolfs Engelman Studio in Kaunas city. We invite you to an extraordinary tour and tasting, during which you will get to know the art of beer production.
“Consumers are very often surprised when they have the opportunity to see how beer is made or even participate in the production process. All myths and stereotypes collapse – beer turns out to be a living product with a unique production path, and not an industrial drink,” says Marius Horbačauskas, CEO of Wolfs Engelman.
Bravor opens the “Wolfs Engelman Studio” open to taste improvisations and education, which will invite guests to interactively engage in the creative and cognitive process.
Excursion B
Excurssion B „Escorted motorcycle tour of the Zanavykai region” (120 km)
During the excursion, we will get to know the region of Užnemunė, called Zanavykai. It is located in the ethnographic territory of Lithuania – Suvalkija. For many centuries, the Suvalkija region was uninhabited. There were huge forests here. After the Battle of Žalgiris (Greenwald), the lands of Sūduva-Suvalkija became the possessions of the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The royal hunts took place in these lands.
First we will take the river ferry through Nemunas to reach the other bank, where our journey will begin. There are only two river ferries left in Lithuania, you will have the opportunity to be carried one of them.
Our route passes by the Rudsiliai partisan bunker. Partisan bunkers: the historical heritage of the partisan war against the Soviet occupation. This is an important source of knowledge about the fighters for the freedom of Lithuania.
The elegant Zypliai manor will welcome us with the regional Zanavykai kitchen lunch. The Zypliai manor ensemble is surrounded by one of the largest parks in Lithuania – it covers an area of 21 hectares. The history of the Zypliai Manor begins from 1806. In those days it was the property of Duke Joosep Poniatowski as a reward for the humbles for the Napaleon army.
Next stop – Gelgaudiskis manor. The manor is dated in 15th century. In the 17th century manor owner Oziemblovski got mad about the idea to get rich. The legend says, that the new owner was extremely greedy and strange. While dreaming to build a luxury palace in Krokow, he was thinking how to make more money. He had invited in Gelgaudiskis gold-studying alchemists. One came. And what about the gold? Join the excurssion and find out!
Have you ever ride in a river? There is a unique place in Lithuania, where people are using the river as a road. Ploksciai river – road (street) is the only way to the house for the owners of several homesteads. River Vaiguva flows along a natural soil street for several hundred meters. Tourists used to drive along this river-street, so traffic was prohibited and paved path was build so everyone could walk and admire the unique place.
The last stop back home – Ilguva manor, first mentioned in 1583. in the books of Samogitian courts. Cultural and artistic life was constantly boiling in the manor standing on the bank of the Nemunas, a rich library of a thousand volumes of musical, fiction, historical and agricultural literature was accumulated, Grincevicius family members and landscape paintings hung on the walls of the estate.
River ferry will take us back to Vilkija, where the excurssion is going to be over.
Ethnografic Cellar
The host of the campsite is offering an exclusive opportunity to taste Lithuanian heritage homemade production. In the ethnographic cellar during the short educational program, visitors are offered to taste home wine, traditional Lithuanian sausages, jams made on the farmhouse. The pride – viburnum berry products. Viburnum – a bright red berry with a quite large seed inside. This berry is fully ripen at the end of September, the beginning of October, but it is picked only after the first frosts, because by then the viburnum has a strong bitter taste and is sufficiently acid.
